**File Photo** * SOAP STAR REID DIES Soap star FRANCES REID, who played the DAYS OF OUR LIVES matriarch ALICE HORTON for 42 years, has died. Reid passed away on 3 February (10) at the age of 95. The actress began her career with a small role in 1938 movie Man-Proof, before landing a string of jobs on Broadway. She was said to have been reluctant to accept the part of Alice in Days of our Lives after an exhausting run on another soap opera - Portia Faces Life in 1954. But the role made her a household name after the series' premiere in November 1965 - and eventually earned her a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmys in 2004. Reid made her final appearance on Days of our Lives in December 2007. She married actor Philip Bourneuf in 1940 and the pair remained together until his death in 1979.
